A CONTROVERSIAL £10m plan to regenerate Arnold town centre can be revealed in the Post today.

Gedling Borough Council wants to close Arnold Leisure Centre, build a new one in the town and redevelop the top end of Front Street.

However, a leaked document shows two more leisure centres – in Redhill and Calverton – would have to close for the scheme to proceed.

In addition, the Pond Hills Lane Community Centre would shut down and the Bonington Theatre – which is based in Arnold Leisure Centre – would be closed.

The document also highlights possible job losses.

This proposal to regenerate Arnold falls short of the vision put forward in a masterplan drawn up by the authority in 2006.

That outlined a vision for restaurants, cafes, bars, a new square and housing, as well as the relocation of the theatre.

Gedling MP Vernon Coaker said the council had not delivered on promises.

"The council is failing because we have a confused picture of the future of leisure and community centres, libraries and the theatre. Nobody in Arnold has a clue about these plans."

The proposal will be considered by the council's cabinet next month.

Councillor Bob Tait, deputy leader of Gedling Borough Council, said plans were at a very early stage and nothing had been decided.
